Review
“With deep reporting and a profound understanding of the football life, Ian O'Connor comes as close as humanly possible to solving the mystery of the great football sphinx, Bill Belichick, and his unmatched coaching career.” – David Maraniss, best-selling author of When Pride Still Mattered, A Life of Vince Lombardi "I thought I knew everything there is to know about the brilliant, secretive coach. The Hoodie would have made a model Prisoner of War. He gives up nothing. And yet Ian O'Connor somehow cracked the code at Fort Foxborough, producing this compelling portrait of the coach and the man. A must-read for football buffs and anyone who appreciates leadership.'' – Dan Shaughnessy, Boston Globe columnist and best-selling author of Francona (with Terry Francona) “In Belichick, Ian O’Connor has delivered an excess of compelling, fresh reporting and muscled writing to construct one of our great coaching biographies. O’Connor illuminates one of sports’ most secretive and mysterious figures. Fast-moving, exhaustively researched, Belichick will transform the way you consider the man and the Patriots' dynasty.” – Adrian Wojnarowski, ESPN Senior Writer and best-selling author of The Miracle of St. Anthony "A tour de force of world-class reporting and masterful, fair-minded storytelling." – Armen Keteyian, contributing correspondent to 60 Minutes and best-selling author of Tiger Woods "It is simply not possible to produce a more interesting, informative and beautifully written biography than Ian O'Connor has in Belichick...This is the kind of gold-standard reporting that all journalists aspire to, and few actually achieve." – Mike Vaccaro, award-winning columnist, New York Post "A valuable portrayal of both the public and private sides of the NFL’s leading coach for the past 20 years that will be in demand among sports collections." – Library Journal, starred review "A fascinating look inside the team so many of us love to hate." – Washington Post "Ian O’Connor’s biography ranks among the best in regards to the NFL . . . The issue with this book is that it fills no real need. If you are a football nerd, there is almost no new material in this book for you. Belichick is a football savant. Belichick is a jerk. Belichick plays fast and loose with the rules. Belichick is a decent person outside of football. Other than a small amount of info regarding the 2017-2018 period, there is little in this book that isn't well known to football fans. And if you aren't a football fan, I'm not sure why you would be reading a biography of someone as one-dimensional as BB.Halberstam's "Education of a Coach" covered most of this material and probably did it better.Bottom line - I didn't finish this book with any appreciable increase in understanding of Belichick or what makes him tick.
I’ve always been a Fan of Ian O’Connors work. I think what makes this book so good is it is very balanced. The author shows both his flaws and strengths. This book includes a lot of information about Belichick that I was unaware of. The “Patriot Way†is to be very stingy with information so I’m guessing the author had some excellent sources and really researched his subject. I was especially taken by the human side of Belichick the author paints such as the $100 hand shakes. While Belichick and his methods have been written about a gazillion times, this book is definitely worth it, I loved it (and I am not a Patriot fan)
I am a pats fan and wanted to like the book. However, seemed like a rehash of old news stories with no value added.
If this your first book you on Bill Belichick I do not believe it goes into has much depth as some of the others. It still is pretty good book should be a fast read. I wish there would have been a little more behind what happen with Jimmy Graoppalo. It does cover more about deflate gate. Lets face it folks most of the fans out there that hate Bill Belechick and the New England Patriots wish their team had as much continued success as the patriots have had and continue to have.Give the book a read
Are you interested in what makes this one-of-a-kind, unbelievably successful coach tick? This is the book that takes you from his Dad’s great influence on him through his Super Bowl wins, spygate and the deflated football scandals and everything in between. This 455 page documentary pulls no punches and takes no prisoners. You get the whole story: good, bad and sometimes ugly but always a page-turner. If you love the Patriots, read this book; if you don’t you will still want to get the full, all sides of the story analysis by the man who dug deep and long to get it right. A must read for all football fans, friends (in New England) and enemies (everywhere else) of the Pats alike.
This book is a hatchet job, pure and simple. Ian O'Conner is a hack journalist with an axe to grind. Don't waste your money.
Anyone who wants to know what makes the greatest football coach of all time and perhaps the greatest overall coach of all time tick, then read this book. It is a fascinating look inside of Bill, his upbringing and sacrifices he's made to become the best. As a fan of the Patriots it was even more enjoyable but I was a fan long before he showed up and will be long after he leaves. A very enjoyable, entertaining and insightful read and hats off to Ian O'Connor for his fine work, uncovering a recluse subject.
Enjoyed the book for its compilation of all that we've come to learn about Belichick over the years, his brilliant sports mind, attention to detail, lack of common decency. Too bad the hundreds of interviews the author conducted aren't reflected in much additional insight into the man, the coach, the competitor who's dominated the sport for two decades.
